about

Recently i was going through a bunch of my old demos from the 2003 period. An interesting time when i was starting to come out of a dark few years in my life. I was still living in our Toronto apartment but Tara and i had finally resolved our frustrations and decided to separate earlier that year. I felt like i was waking up from a weird dream, like my life had been on pause for a few years while we figured that out.

My song writing was still quite abundant through it all though, and with my 1/2 inch 8track set up, i was recording at least one song every day. Many based on my life as usual, like all the songs for the UNINTENDED album which were demoed during the early winter months of 2003. After we finished up that album in March, many more songs were being created with the intention of making a new ELEVATOR album. Songs less about Tara and I this time though, more about myself, who i am and what could be next for me.

Anyhow, I thought you may like to hear these original solo demos for the AUGUST LP. All recorded between May - September 2003. Some are quite similar to the way they later turned out with the band, some are quite different with casio drums and alt lyrics/structures. "Where is the end" actually has completely different lyrics and was originally titled "Safe". Though they were technically "demos", they were all complete recordings with guitars, bass, keyboards, multitracked vocals and drums or percussion. And since i was using the same gear, they sound similar in quality to Elevator's finished album. Only real difference being a lack of Tara's bass + voice, Dallas's dreamy guitar additions and Mark Gaudet's wonderful interpretations of my drum ideas.

For more info on finished Elevator's AUGUST LP, check out the "August Extra" write up that accompanies the bandcamp release in my archive here.

Hope you enjoy hearing this demo collection, thanks for the support.
Love Rick.
