about

Never released or shared before, and at the time recorded with intentions to make a live vinyl album, here is the full 4track recorded set from the Esquire tavern in Moncton on May 21st 1995. Freshly remastered from original stereo master tape.

Timeline-
The last months of 94 were slow for us even though we just released our 2nd full album on SUBPOP called "Forever Again". Julie had her first baby in December and we couldn't do many shows. We made a lot of plans for 1995 though and by the spring we were rehearsing a bunch and getting pumped up again. We did a fun tour of Quebec and Ontario in May and our audiences were bigger than ever. This Moncton show represents us at the end of that tour, a bit wore out but tight and peppy and still excited for the future. Also already doing four new songs that would only be released the next year on our "Purple Blue" album.

Recording details-
The recording was made with my cassette 4track, which i controlled from the stage myself. I used three mics on stage for three of the tracks, and the forth getting a direct feed from the P.A. which was just used for vocals. Our stage set up, as you can see in the cover photo, was purposeful to help the recording style i wanted. I hoped it would capture the stereo close up live sound in a field recording type way. Drums were put up front center with Julie and her amp behind, and the guitars on each side. Two mics were set up on stands a couple feet off the stage, one in the middle of my side off the stage (right in mix) that picked up my amp and that side of the drums. The other on Chris's side (left in mix) that picked up his amp and the other side of the drums. The third mic was duct taped under Marks stool facing the floor (mixed center) and picked up kick, snare and some bass amp. This set up worked pretty well though the bass is a little low at first and actually bleeds in the left mic too, but once she turns the amp up it starts coming through better. Actually a neat part of this recording style is how the mix changes when amps get turned up or down. Mostly up. A little echo was added hear and there on the vocals when i originally mixed it, but it's pretty straight and simple over all. I didn't cut any between song banter either, we just didn't do any and were pretty good about going one song into the next as quick as possible.

We played two full sets that day with three other bands at each. I recorded our first set too from the afternoon but we were sloppier and the mix is bad. I actually brought the 4track home between sets and checked the levels then rearranged the mics a bit before the 2nd set in the evening that you hear here.

The version of "I Exist" from this set was previously released on side two of our 1995 "The Road South" 7inch.

Special thanks so much to RAY AUFFREY for digging out the negatives of this picture for me to use on the cover. They were messed up a bit as you can see, and never printed before, but i think it's looking great now after a bit of photoshop work. Its the only pic i could find from the actual show and i'm once again very happy Ray's such a good archivist of the Moncton scene.
