about

Our last album with Subpop records was the 1999 "VAGUE PREMONITION" lp. Recorded at Chemical Sound studios in Toronto on a 2 inch 24 track by Daryl Smith in October 1998 and mixed by Jack Endino in Moncton that November. This was a sort of last attempt by Subpop to get us a bit more success in the USA. Even the inclusion of Syd Barrett's NO GOOD TRYING which we originally demo'ed just for fun, was their idea for more possible US college airplay. The problem was that i wasn't prepared, interested or able to deal with the amount of touring they wanted us to start doing down there and after a short american tour opening for Built to Spill in spring 99, i told them that i didn't want to do it anymore and we parted ways.

But before all that, back in early 1998, before this big studio idea was even in the plan, we were recording lots of stuff at home on our trusty old 1/2 inch 8 track as usual. We finished up the songs for "THE SUCH" soundtrack in March, and through the spring and summer we worked on stuff for our next full length album. Collected here is the home recorded version of the sequenced album that we had gathered before going into the "big studio" in October to redo them.

I really like hearing these home versions again, they sound more akin to the rest of our discography in quality and style. That's not to say i don't like the way the album turned out as well. Working at Chemical sound in Toronto with Daryl was a very nice experience and i like having a different sounding document of our band. Mixing with Jack Endino in Moncton and having him stay with us at our home for a week telling us stories was also lots of fun and a great memory.

I appreciate all these memories and just wanna preserve all these old tapes before they deteriorate any more. They're precious to me, i hope some of you will dig hearing them too.
